Me And My Elderly Friends
In a just a few short weeks, I will turn 81 years old. That milestone places me with most of my friends, "the elderly." We are a group that are witnesses to a world that no longer exists. We are the last generation to remember a time before computer screens and instant connections. Our lives span one of the most remarkable transformations in human history. We grew up without computers and smartphones, and now live fully in a digital world.

Today’s generations couldn't possibly imagine a childhood without smartphones, videos, or digital distractions. Our toys were simple and often homemade. We played cowboys and Indians, played marbles in the dirt, hopscotched over chalk-drawn squares on cracked sidewalks, jump-rope, and biked through neighborhoods with our friends. When the streetlights turned on at dusk, it meant the end of a day of adventures, and we knew it was time to go home.

Our memories were made playing outside, with scraped knees and elbows. Our laughter ring out through our neighborhood streets and alleyways. Our friendships were built face-to-face, not through screens or social media. We learned to entertain ourselves with imagination and each other's company, not with digital devices.

School was different back than too. We filled notebooks with handwritten notes carefully copied from chalkboards. Information didn’t come instantly, so we learned to think and solve problems patiently. Mistakes were erased with a rubber eraser, not deleted with a click.

We waited for days for handwritten letters to arrive in the mailbox. Telephones were rotary dials, and party lines meant neighbors could listen in to our conversations. Today, we see the face of a loved one instantly on a small screen that fits in your back pocket, no matter the distance.

We, "the elderly," witnessed incredible milestones. One unforgettable moment was watching Neil Armstrong take his first steps on the Moon on a black-and-white television. We sat in our living rooms, amazed by what human ingenuity could achieve.

The life we have lived is a remarkable story. We are living history, carrying memories that span decades and two centuries. Our generation experienced the world before and after the digital revolution. We have witnessed changes that few others will ever experience. We are part of a generation that will always remain one of a kind.
