Implications of Electing Tyler Howell as Haywood County Sheriff
The 2026 Haywood County Sheriff's race has drawn significant attention, with Waynesville Police Officer Tyler Howell running as the Democratic candidate against Republican Mark Mease, a seasoned law enforcement officer with over 20 years at the sheriff's office. While Howell and his supporters present him as a moderate Democrat, a closer look reveals a different picture.

In my opinion, which is based on information being put forth by supporters of Tyler Howell for Haywood County Sheriff, Tyler Howell identifies with a progressive, left-wing platform that aligns closely with socialist Democrat Party policies. As such, Howell will emphasize law enforcement practices centered on equity and social justice rather than traditional crime-fighting priorities. Key aspects of Howell’s approach appear to include:
No cooperation with ICE officers: A sheriff Tyler Howell will be under great pressure not to assist federal immigration enforcement, potentially affecting community safety and inter-agency collaboration.
Prioritizing equity and social justice in law enforcement: Howell’s policies would follow socialist Democrat's doctrine which only sees systemic inequalities in every aspect of government which will shift focus away from strict crime control measures.
Diverse hiring practices: While diversity in law enforcement is important, Howell’s emphasis on hiring based on equity will lead to promotions and staffing decisions influenced more by social goals than merit or experience.
Residents should consider how these policies have played out in nearby cities. Asheville and Charlotte have faced rising crime rates and concerns about public safety, which are attributed to progressive law enforcement strategies.
To understand the potential impact of Howell’s leadership, it helps to look at real examples. Asheville and Charlotte have struggled with:
High crime rates: Both cities have seen increases in violent crimes, property crimes, and drug-related offenses in recent years under Democrat law enforcement.
Soft-on-crime punishments: Policies that reduce jail time or lower penalties for certain offenses have been linked to repeat offenses and a perception of lawlessness.
Unsafe environments for families and children: Parents and community members of Asheville and Charlotte express growing concerns about safety in neighborhoods, schools, and public spaces. This is what can be expected in Haywood County should Tyler Howell be elected as our next county sheriff.
If Howell’s policies mirror those in these cities, Haywood County will face similar challenges. The focus on social justice and equity, while well-intentioned, comes at the expense of effective crime prevention and public safety.

In contrast, Mark Mease offers a traditional, conservative approach to law enforcement. His priorities include:
Being tough on crime: Mease supports strict enforcement and penalties to deter criminal activity and protect residents.
Close cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, including ICE: This collaboration aims to enhance public safety and ensure coordinated responses to crime.
Promotion based on merit and accomplishments: Mease emphasizes rewarding officers for their skills, experience, and results rather than social or political considerations.
Mease’s approach focuses on maintaining order and safety, which many residents value highly in a sheriff.
When deciding who should lead the sheriff’s office, voters need to weigh the potential consequences of each candidate’s policies:
Public safety vs. social justice priorities: Howell’s focus on equity will reduce the department’s ability to respond effectively to crime, while Mease’s tough-on-crime stance aims to keep communities safe.
Community trust and cooperation: Cooperation with federal agencies like ICE, strengthens law enforcement networks. Howell’s refusal to cooperate will isolate the sheriff’s office.
Department culture and morale: Promotions based on merit encourage professionalism and accountability. Howell’s emphasis on equity-based promotions will affect morale and performance.
Residents should ask themselves what kind of community they want to live in and what kind of leadership will best protect their families.
The choice between Tyler Howell and Mark Mease is more than a political contest; it is a decision about the future safety and well-being of Haywood County. Howell’s progressive, socialist-leaning policies reflect a broader national trend in Democratic circles but come with risks demonstrated in other cities. Mease offers a law enforcement philosophy grounded in experience, cooperation, and a focus on crime reduction.
