Understanding Its Organization, Funding, and Political Violence Trends

Antifa has emerged as a politically radical group often associated with violence and unrest, particularly in cities governed by Democrat mayors. This group, which has been described as a mob of radical socialist extremists, many of whom are paid to participate in protests, was officially labeled a domestic terrorist organization by President Trump through an executive order signed on September 22.

On October 8, a roundtable discussion brought together various experts, including journalist Andy Ngo, to shed light on the issues surrounding Antifa and its activities. The central questions discussed were: how is Antifa organized, and who is funding these individuals? While members of the Democrat Party claim Antifa is merely an idea, evidence suggests that it is a structured organization.

Antifa, short for "anti-fascist," supposedly is not a formal, centralized organization. Socialist Political figures and others claim that it is comprised of a decentralized network of individuals and groups united as a far-right ideological movement. This loose structure makes it difficult to identify leaders and their funders. Members often engage in direct action, which can range from moderately peaceful protests to violent confrontations.

For example, during the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd, Antifa members were involved in deadly and destructive clashes in various cities, with Portland experiencing significant violence and destruction. Tactics which undermine our Judeo-Christian principles and free speech.

Journalist Andy Ngo has extensively documented Antifa's activities and has personally experienced the dangers associated with the movement. In June 2019, during a protest in Portland, Ngo was attacked by Antifa members, suffering serious injuries including a brain bleed. These experiences have shaped his perspective and led him to advocate for a stronger response from authorities.

During the roundtable discussion hosted by President Trump, Ngo shared his experiences and stressed the need for comprehensive strategies to address Antifa. He emphasized that understanding Antifa's organization and funding is vital to countering their impact on public safety and Judeo-Christian conservative values.

What has been learned from the roundtable is that Antifa gives the appearance of operating through networks of local chapters and other similar groups, each with varying ideologies and tactics. This decentralized nature enables them to avoid exposing their leadership and funders. The use of anonymity, such as wearing masks during protests, further complicates monitoring and accountability. The absence of identifiable leaders emboldens individuals to engage in illegal behavior without fear of consequences, making it difficult for law enforcement to intervene effectively.

Questions about Antifa's funding persist. Although there is no single, definitive answer, investigations suggest that Antifa relies on a combination of grassroots fundraising and donations from sympathetic supporters. However, the extraordinary costs of covering the coordination of the riots, payment to hired protesters, and the associated legal fees for bail and court costs would suggest that grassroots and crowdfunding would fall far short of the expenses their riots generate.

The rise of Antifa is part of a larger trend of increasing political violence in America. High-profile incidents, such as the tragic shooting at an event for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, highlight the dangers of extreme political polarization. Research from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) indicated that over eight hundred incidents of political violence were tied to Antifa protests.

Addressing Antifa violence will require a multifaceted approach. The designation of Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization is a significant step forward. Now, law enforcement entities have access to many more tools and legal avenues to gain a deeper understanding of Antifa's organization, leadership, and funding, which is essential to formulating effective responses.
