The Only Way To Eliminate A Vast Majority of Corruption and Incompetence

Have you heard of an Article V, Convention of States?
The Convention of States Project is a national effort to call a Convention of States under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to only proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on members of Congress and federal officials.
What is a Convention of States?

It is a meeting initiated by state legislatures under Article V of the Constitution for the express purpose of proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Thirty-four state legislatures must pass a resolution to apply for a convention of states addressing the same subject matter. As of today, 19 states have passed the Convention of States resolution; 8 states have passed in one chamber, and 12 states have active legislation pending in either one chamber or both chambers. Support for convening a Convention of States is growing rapidly.
Why an Amendment calling for fiscal restraints?

Well, for starters, we have an unsustainable $38 trillion in national debt. Then there’s the fact that our federal legislators haven’t passed a budget since 1996. That’s twenty-nine years and continuing. Without an Amendment, our legislators, who are role models for honesty and integrity, would lose access to the billions of dollars that they use to line their pockets, pay off donors and supporters, fund socialist initiatives, bribe states to relinquish their sovereignty to the federal government, and support the wars and corruption around the world.
An amendment calling for fiscal restraints would force the federal government to be fiscally responsible, lower the debt, pass yearly balanced budgets, and place a cap on taxes, all while cutting spending.
Why an Amendment calling for limiting the federal government's power and jurisdiction?

To limit Congress's addiction to its power and ability to waste our tax dollars, including limitations on or outright bans of earmark spending. Further, although corruption will always be a part of politics, a Convention of States can limit the power and authority of corrupt congressional politicians. This Amendment would restrict Washington's jurisdiction to only a narrowly tailored set of topics. This can get the federal government out of education, the environment, energy, and a host of other issues that it is woefully incompetent to manage. It would shut down the vast majority of the 400-plus federal departments and agencies, leaving only those functions clearly designated as the federal government's responsibility in the Constitution. Which, by the way, is about ten or twelve functions; all other functions belong to the jurisdiction of the sovereign state.
Why an Amendment calling for term limits?

Let me count just a few of the reasons why:
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) — 50 years
Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) — 48 years
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) — 44 years
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) — 44 years
Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY) — 44 years
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) — 44 years
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) — 44 years
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) — 42 years
Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) — 42 years
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — 40 years
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) - 37 years
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) – 34 years
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) – 27 years
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) – 26 years
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) – 24 years
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) – 23 years
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – 19 years
Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) – 19 years
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Bottom Line

Yes, it would be wonderful to have legislation passed that imposes fiscal restraints on the federal government, limits its power and jurisdiction, and imposes term limits. However, we have a couple of serious problems going this route.
First of all, our courageous Legislators will put up a fierce fight against the passage of such laws, as both Democrats and Republicans will not be keen on being limited to their lucrative, elite positions.
Second, remember that laws passed can be easily repealed, and it will not be all that many years before we have a legislative body with a sitting President who will repeal such laws.
So, the bottom line is that the only way we can have true sustainability is through Amendments to the Constitution.

Yes, amendments to the Constitution can also be repealed. Doing so, however, will be extraordinarily difficult. There will be no massive movement on the part of the people to convene another Convention of States to repeal such amendments, as they would be way too popular with the citizens of our country.
That leaves Congress to propose amendments repealing fiscal restraints, limited power and jurisdiction, and term limits amendments. They may someday have the votes in both chambers to propose such amendments, but getting the needed three-quarters of states to ratify such proposals will be near impossible.
So let's keep our eyes on the real solution and double down on getting the necessary number of states to pass our Resolution calling for the convening of a Convention of States. This way, we get Term Limits, Balanced Budgets, and a restricted federal government unable to overreach into the affairs of the sovereign states.
