Mismanagement or Population Control

Tax Hikes in Waynesville and Maggie Valley
Property owners in Waynesville and Maggie Valley are facing new tax increases that raise serious questions about the reasons behind these hikes. Both towns have joined Haywood County in raising property taxes, but the motives and consequences of these increases deserve closer examination. Are these tax hikes a deliberate effort to curb population and housing growth, or are they the result of poor financial management and questionable spending priorities?
Waynesville plans to raise property taxes by 2 cents, which on the surface seems modest compared to Haywood County’s 7-cent increase and Maggie Valley’s 5-cent hike. This difference has led some Waynesville property owners to feel fortunate. However, this view overlooks other cost increases that residents will face, such as rising water and sewer fees starting July 1st and a 2% increase in sales taxes. When these additional costs are factored in, Waynesville residents may end up paying as much or more than those in Maggie Valley or Haywood County.
The combined effect of these increases means that property owners will face a heavier financial burden than the headline tax rates suggest. This raises concerns about the overall impact on residents’ budgets and the local economy.
Two main explanations emerge for these tax increases:
Population and Housing Growth Control: Have our elected officials stubbled on a way to curby population growth and housing development without having to face their donors and supporters who look to them to automatically approve their requests in exchange for their donations and votes? By making it more expensive to own property, officials may be hoping to discourage new residents and limit expansion. This approach, sometimes called "tax them out," can have significant consequences for community growth, local businesses, and housing availability.
Financial Mismanagement and Spending Priorities: Another explanation points to poor management of existing tax revenues. Critics claim that local governments are squandering funds on inappropriate expenditures, including programs that may not serve the broader community’s interests. These include what some describe as “ridiculous socialist programs” and initiatives that benefit specific donors or officials personally. Without addressing these spending issues, tax increases may only patch budget gaps temporarily without solving underlying problems.
A troubling aspect of the proposed budgets in Waynesville, Maggie Valley, and Haywood County is the absence of any meaningful cuts or elimination of existing programs. Instead of trimming expenses, officials appear to rely solely on raising taxes to close the gap between revenue and expenditures.
Many of the funded programs only increases residents’ dependence on government support rather than encouraging self-reliance and personal responsibility. This approach can create a cycle where taxpayers bear a growing financial burden while the community becomes less resilient.
Taxpayers would likely accept modest tax increases more readily if local governments showed a commitment to reducing spending on programs that do not deliver clear benefits. Some practical steps include:
Reviewing and Cutting Ineffective Programs: Conduct thorough credible audits of current initiatives to identify those that are failed initiatives or fail to meet established goals or serve only narrow interests.
Prioritizing Essential Services: Focus funding on critical services like public safety, infrastructure, and education, while scaling back on socialist program or personal agenda expenditures.
Increasing Transparency and Accountability: Make budget details accessible and understandable to residents, allowing them to see where their money goes and hold officials accountable.
Re-evaluate Expenditures: Ensure spending aligns with community needs and values, and cut out the fat and babysitting expenditures.

The combined tax and fee increases will strain household budgets, especially for fixed-income residents and small business owners. Higher costs may discourage new families from moving in and push current residents to reconsider their long-term plans in the area.
Moreover, constant tax increases can have unintended consequences, such as reduced economic vitality. Communities thrive when elected officials have the wisdom, courage, and commitment to their constituents to balance growth with responsible financial management.
Waynesville and Maggie Valley’s recent tax hikes reflect deeper challenges in local governance and fiscal responsibility. Whether these increases aim to control population growth or mask financial mismanagement, the result is a heavier burden on property owners without clear evidence of spending discipline.
For taxpayers to accept future increases, local governments must demonstrate a willingness to cut unnecessary programs and focus on sustainable budgeting. Otherwise, residents will continue to face rising costs without seeing improvements in services or community well-being.
