Mark Mease's Vision for a Safer Haywood County

Over the past five years (2019-2024), Haywood County recorded 3,355 violent crimes and 7,946 property crimes. The average violent crime rate stands at 131.9 per 100k residents, which is 24.2% above the national average. Property crime averages 370.2 per 100k, 126.3% above the national average. The most common offense was Property Crime, while Rape had the lowest rate. Data is sourced from the FBI Crime Data Explorer

With a crime rate of 3,030 per 100,000 people, the risk of becoming a crime victim in Haywood County is about 1 in 33 each year. This rate is slightly better than the national average but has been rising steadily from 2,881 per 100,000 residents over the last two years. These numbers reveal a growing concern that goes beyond statistics—residents’ sense of security is weakening. Mark Mease, candidate for Haywood County Sheriff, is committed to stopping the steady increase in crime rates in Haywood County and restoring safety and community well-being.

Crime rates are more than just numbers; they shape how people feel about their neighborhoods. When crime increases, residents often feel unsafe in their own homes and public spaces. This fear can erode trust in local government and law enforcement. When trust declines, people hesitate to report suspicious activities or get involved in community safety programs. This creates a cycle where crime can grow unchecked because fewer eyes and ears are watching.

Fear of crime not only affects individuals but also impacts the entire county’s economy and social structure. Families who feel unsafe often move away to find better living conditions. This migration reduces customer traffic for local businesses and shrinks the tax base. With fewer resources, funding for essential services, including public safety, becomes limited, making it harder to address the root causes of crime. The loss of community cohesion can lead to social isolation and mental health challenges. These effects highlight the human cost of rising crime and the importance of policies that prioritize safety.

Mark Mease understands that rebuilding safety in Haywood County requires more than just enforcing laws. It demands restoring trust between law enforcement and residents and creating a community where everyone feels protected and valued. His campaign focuses on practical solutions that balance safety with respect for residents’ freedoms.

Mark plans to support and strengthen county law enforcement by improving training, increasing transparency, and encouraging officers to engage positively with the community. Building trust starts with officers who are seen as partners rather than just enforcers. Mease believes that when residents trust law enforcement, they are more likely to cooperate and help prevent crime.

Haywood County Sheriff candidate Mark Mease emphasizes the importance of protecting individual freedoms while maintaining public order. His approach respects residents’ rights and promotes fairness in law enforcement. This balance is crucial for building lasting trust and ensuring that safety measures do not infringe on personal liberties.

If Mark Mease is elected and his vision is realized, Haywood County will see a reversal in the rising crime trend. Residents would feel safer walking their streets, children could play outside without fear, and local businesses could thrive with more customers. Community cohesion would improve as neighbors reconnect and work together to keep their neighborhoods safe. This renewed sense of belonging can reduce social isolation and improve mental health outcomes for many families.

Safety is a shared responsibility. While law enforcement plays a critical role, residents also have a part to play. Getting involved in community programs, staying informed, and supporting candidate Mark Mease, who prioritizes safety, can make a real difference.

Haywood County’s future depends on rebuilding trust and creating an environment where everyone feels secure. Mease’s vision offers a clear path forward—one that values community, respects freedoms, and puts safety first.

After meeting both gentleman running for sheriff, watching the debate and seeing Sheriff Wilke’s pathetic budget report to the county commissioners, Mark Mease has my vote! He cares about the community in which he serves. He’s not about the pomp and circumstance that Wilke has proven to be his agenda! I want a man whose going to protect me, listen to me and show up at my house when I have a crisis! Mark Mease is that person! Wilke could care less about me! I’m not part of his network of cronies who bow down and kiss his ring! No thank you to that kind of leadership! I’m sure many law officials agree with my opinions! When Mark Mease is…
