Questionable Transfer of Haywood County Taxpayer Funds to Asheville's Socialist Government

In a surprising revelation that is sparking considerable debate, it has been learned that the Haywood County Board of Commissioners is allocating $75,000 annually of Haywood County residents' tax money to Asheville, NC. This decision raises eyebrows, particularly given Asheville's reputation for implementing policies viewed as excessively socialist. The funds are earmarked to support the socialist-Democrat-governed city's strained financial situation—this transfer questions Haywood County's Board of Commissioners' priorities and concerns about their fiscal responsibility.

This situation raises an important question: Why is Haywood County, which has its own urgent needs, sending taxpayer dollars to support Asheville's initiatives? For example, Asheville reported a city budget shortfall of about 10% last year, indicating financial mismanagement.

Understanding the Context

Asheville is known for its progressive policies. The city has been too lenient in funding initiatives that often fail to deliver measurable benefits for residents. Instead of addressing its financial issues with budget cuts or re-evaluating spending habits, Asheville appears to rely on nearby counties for financial support, including Haywood.

Haywood County has several urgent projects that could greatly benefit from extra funding. Additionally, funding could significantly improve public services and schools, which are essential for the county's growth.

Redirecting $75,000 to Asheville appears to be a misallocation of resources, especially when local issues require urgent attention. Community education programs, healthcare services, and infrastructure projects directly benefit the residents of Haywood County—matters that should take precedence over funding a liberal city that is struggling with its finances.

The Argument Against Financial Transfers

If Asheville cannot sustain its programs without external funding, it should reevaluate its financial strategies. Relying on neighboring counties to fill budget gaps is not an appropriate solution and sets a concerning precedent for financial responsibility.

Haywood County taxpayers should not bear the burden of covering another city's reckless financial shortfalls. Instead, the focus should be on ensuring that local funds are used to improve the quality of life for local residents. For example, investing in community safety or maintaining local parks should come first.

Sending Haywood County taxpayer dollars to Asheville raises serious concerns about accountability and the Haywood County Board of Commissioners' responsible spending. If Haywood County has extra funds, a smarter option might be to lower property taxes for residents. Studies show that even a 1% cut in taxes could boost disposable income, helping families and giving the local economy a lift.

Final Thoughts

The transfer of $75,000 in Haywood County taxpayer funds to Asheville’s programs raises serious questions about the Board of Commissioners' sense of fiscal responsibility and local priorities. As Haywood County faces its own challenges, it is essential to focus on the needs and well-being of its residents rather than supporting another city's financial issues.

Taxpayer dollars should improve the quality of life for local residents, not support programs in a city that is struggling financially. By being transparent and involving the community in financial decisions, the Haywood County Board of Commissioners can ensure that taxpayer funds are used wisely and effectively.

Ultimately, if there are surplus funds, the focus should be on directly reducing property taxes for residents to improve their financial well-being. It is the right time to reevaluate spending priorities and pledge to governance that puts the community's best interests first.

Is this the money Haywood County Commissioners have been sending every year for who knows how many years to the Buncombe County Chamber of Commerce to solicit industry to move to Haywood County? If so, Kevin Ensley defends this vigorously and swears that eventually it will pay off with some big industry moving here. I just have never understood how or why Buncombe County should be involved in any way.......I'd live to know who exactly is benefitting financially from this.......because someone certainly is! If this is different money, that is even worse!

Yes, this is the annual transfer of dollars aimed at attracting industries to move to Haywood County, supposedly. However, I know of no studies conducted by the Haywood County Board of Commissioners that show any positive results in attracting industries to Haywood County as a result of our providing this $75,000 to the Buncombe County Chamber of Commerce.

If the Haywood County Board of Commissioners strongly believes that efforts should be made to attract businesses to Haywood County, then that $75,000 should be spent by our county to ensure the initiative is aimed at attracting companies to Haywood County. Currently, we have no way of knowing if that $75,000 benefits us or Buncombe County.
