Haywood County Jail Expansion Mismanagement Ignites Outrage

The decision by the Haywood County Board of Commissioners to approve a large expansion of the county jail has ignited significant public outrage. The new facility will nearly double the jail’s capacity from 109 to 254 beds, but this expansion comes with a steep price: a major property tax increase for local residents. What raises eyebrows is the fact that the jail’s daily inmate population has averaged around 114 since 2025, well below the new capacity. This discrepancy has led many to question the necessity and management behind this costly project.

The new jail project is driving a substantial property tax hike in Haywood County. The county plans to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to build a facility that more than doubles current bed capacity. While the sheriff’s office argues that the expansion is necessary, the county’s own data shows a declining trend in inmate numbers since 2021, with an average daily population hovering around 114 inmates.

This raises a critical question: why commit to such a large expansion when the current and projected inmate populations do not justify it? The financial burden on taxpayers is real and immediate, yet the justification for this scale of expansion remains unclear.

Commissioner Tommy Long dismissed constituent criticism, stating that the jail expansion had been discussed extensively—about 17 times over the past couple of years. Commissioner Brandon Rogers explained that the Board relied heavily on the input from the current and previous sheriffs, trusting their expertise in determining the county’s needs.

Board Chairman Kevin Ensley admitted that he went along with the sheriffs’ projections despite the downward trend in inmate population. This reliance on the sheriff’s word without independent analysis has become a focal point of criticism.

The commissioners’ decision to trust the sheriffs without conducting independent reviews or studies highlights a serious lapse in oversight. It is the Board’s responsibility to evaluate the needs of county departments thoroughly, using data and expert analysis rather than relying solely on the word of department heads.

This lack of accountability has led to a costly mismanagement of county resources. The taxpayers of Haywood County are now facing a property tax increase to cover a jail expansion that may exceed actual needs. This situation reflects poorly on the Haywood County Board of Commissioners’ ability to represent its constituents effectively.

For residents, the consequences are clear: higher property taxes and a jail facility larger than necessary. This raises concerns about fiscal responsibility and the prioritization of county funds on the part of the Haywood County Board of Commissioners.

The controversy also highlights the importance of transparency in local government decisions. When elected officials fail to conduct proper oversight, taxpayers bear the financial burden without clear justification.

To prevent similar issues in the future, Haywood County’s Board of Commissioners must:

  • Conduct independent studies and needs assessments before approving large expenditures.

  • Increase transparency by sharing data and decision-making processes with the public.

  • Hold department heads accountable by verifying their projections and plans.

  • Engage with constituents to address concerns and explain decisions clearly.

These steps are necessary to help rebuild trust and ensure that county funds are used wisely.

How about Rehab hospitals for people with drug issues instead of waiting until they commit a crime and putting them in jail? How about places for the homeless to live, because they’re probably our biggest criminals. Let’s get to the reasons for the crimes instead of building bigger jails. That is stupid, all you’re doing is making the problem worse. Whatever you put your money on is going to increase. Why can’t we help people who are having problems and because of those problems commit crimes? That makes a heck of a lot more sense than building new jails, and taxing everybody for them. If you have a lot of empty space in a jail, it will fill up. Please…
