Haywood County: Rising Crime and Drug Seizures

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office released its 2025 Annual Report, revealing significant changes in crime patterns and law enforcement activity over the past year. The report shows a sharp increase in criminal investigations, a troubling rise in child abuse cases, and notable shifts in drug seizures.

The criminal investigations division experienced a dramatic surge in cases, jumping from 160 in 2024 to 735 in 2025. Alongside this rise, the number of search warrants issued by the division increased by 70%, reaching nearly 130 in 2025.

The spike in investigations covers various types of crimes, reflecting a broader trend of rising criminal activity in the county.

Haywood County Sheriff Bill Wilke expressed serious concern over the increase in child abuse cases reported in Haywood County. The number of incidents rose from 3,046 in 2024 to 3,390 in 2025, marking an 11.3% increase. More alarmingly, the sheriff noted a 50% rise specifically in child abuse investigations, underscoring the severity of this issue.

The ongoing war on drugs remains a central focus for the sheriff’s office, with mixed results in 2025. Methamphetamine seizures dropped by nearly 2,500 grams compared to the previous year, indicating some success in curbing this particular drug. Meanwhile, fentanyl seizures stayed relatively steady, with 614 grams and 2 dosage units seized in 2025, compared to 575 grams and 71 dosage units in 2024.

The most dramatic changes occurred with cocaine and crack cocaine. Cocaine seizures soared from just 3 grams in 2024 to 1,650 grams in 2025, a staggering 3,222% increase. Crack cocaine seizures also rose significantly, from 51.2 grams to 154.3 grams. These sharp increases suggest a shift in drug trafficking and usage patterns within the county.

Morphine seizures also saw a notable rise, increasing from 13 dosage units in 2024 to 30 milliliters and 89 dosage units in 2025. This points to a growing presence of prescription opioids in the local drug market.

The data from the 2025 Annual Report paints a complex picture of crime and law enforcement in Haywood County. The surge in criminal investigations and search warrants indicates a wider range of offenses. The rise in child abuse cases demands urgent attention from both law enforcement and community support systems.

The changing drug seizure patterns highlight the need for adaptable strategies in the fight against illegal substances. While progress has been made in reducing methamphetamine, the sharp rise in cocaine and crack cocaine seizures signals new challenges ahead.
