Grassroots Hero Rises After Hurricane Helene’s Devastation

Last September, Hurricane Helene struck the U.S. mainland with deadly force, leaving Western North Carolina reeling from the worst disaster in recent history. The storm claimed an estimated 108 lives and caused approximately $80 billion in damages. While disaster recovery efforts involved civilian, county, state, and federal resources, the response revealed critical gaps and highlighted the power of grassroots action.
Hurricane Helene's impact was catastrophic. Entire communities were flooded, homes destroyed, and infrastructure crippled. The scale of destruction overwhelmed local and state agencies. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was tasked with coordinating disaster relief but quickly faced criticism for its slow and ineffective response.

Videos surfaced showing FEMA officials dismissing civilian air drops of supplies early in the relief effort. This lack of urgency frustrated many residents and observers. President-elect Trump expressed outrage at FEMA’s performance, calling for its reorganization or even elimination. In contrast, Congressman Chuck Edwards defended FEMA and supported legislation to elevate it to a cabinet-level agency reporting directly to the President. This approach, however, will not translate into faster or more effective aid on the ground.
Amid the chaos, local churches became beacons of hope. Their volunteers worked tirelessly to provide shelter, food, and emotional support to flood victims. These faith-based organizations knew their communities intimately and could respond quickly where government efforts lagged.

One of the most remarkable stories came from a spontaneously formed relief group called Savage Freedoms Relief Operations. This group, made up of special operations veterans and civilians, was led by congressional candidate Adam Smith. They mobilized rapidly, delivering aid directly to the hardest-hit areas in Western North Carolina.
Smith’s team demonstrated how grassroots organizations can fill critical gaps in disaster response. Unlike distant bureaucracies, they had boots on the ground, working side by side with flood victims. Their efforts were not only swift but also deeply personal, building trust and providing tailored support.
The disaster response has become a political flashpoint in North Carolina. Adam Smith, who led Savage Freedoms Relief Operations, is challenging Congressman Chuck Edwards in the upcoming March primaries. Smith’s hands-on approach contrasts sharply with Edwards’ focus on Washington politics and support for FEMA’s bureaucratic structure.

Supporters of big government argue that better organization and increased funding will improve disaster relief. Yet, the ongoing struggles in Western North Carolina suggest otherwise. Fifteen months after Hurricane Helene, many families still face hardship. State agencies and the federal government have not delivered the sustained support needed for full recovery.
Smith’s grassroots model shows that local, community-driven efforts can be more effective. His team’s rapid response and ongoing presence in affected areas highlight the importance of direct engagement and accountability.

Replacing complacent leadership with committed, hands-on advocates like Adam Smith could change how disaster relief is handled in North Carolina. His example proves that real help comes from those willing to get involved directly, not just make speeches or pass legislation.
Western North Carolina’s recovery from Hurricane Helene is far from complete. The community still needs resources, attention, and effective leadership. Leadership that will come with the election of Adam Smith to represent North Carolina's 11 District.
Disasters will continue to test our resilience. The best response comes from a combination of local action and improved government coordination. By learning from the successes and failures of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, North Carolina can build a stronger, more responsive disaster relief system.

The story of Hurricane Helene is a reminder that in times of crisis, ordinary people, like Adam Smith, can become heroes. When government falls short, patriotic heroes like Adam rise. Supporting those who step up, as Adam Smith did, is the first step toward healing and rebuilding.
Adam Smith has proven that he is the leader Western North Carolina can depend on. Your vote for Adam Smith in March 2026, is a vote for the people of Western North Carolina.
