The Convention of States Action movement, in collaboration with legislators across the nation, is striving to bring about crucial changes to rein in our out-of-control government. The North Carolina Convention of States actively seeks your support in this nationwide effort. By recruiting petition signers, active volunteers, and leaders to secure the passage of HJR 235, a Resolution calls for convening a Convention of States.
We aim to introduce Amendments to the Constitution that address Term Limits, Fiscal Restraint to curb America’s excessive spending, and Federal jurisdictional restraint to curtail the federal government's persistent overreach.
The urgency of the situation is underscored by the current and past actions of our elected representatives. Their abuse of power and dishonorable conduct, as evidenced by Senator Bob Menendez's recent conviction, necessitates the immediate implementation of term limits for political figures. The ability of these individuals to serve unlimited terms has emboldened many to use their seniority or positions of power within Congress to bring harm and dishonor to Congress and the Constitution they have sworn to protect.
On July 16, a New Jersey jury found Senator Bob Menendez guilty on all counts in his federal corruption trial. Menendez was convicted of 16 counts — including bribery, extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent — for his role in a years-long bribery scheme. *
Menendez is far from being the first member of Congress to be indicted and convicted on felony charges. Members of Congress have been indicted and convicted for crimes ranging from bribery to fraud and extortion to lying under oath. But the vast majority of indictments and convictions involve money. Typically, indictments and convictions involve the acceptance of bribes in exchange for special favors involving legislation being considered, which will impact entities that bribe members of Congress to vote in a certain manner. **
The word "racketeering" often appears in reports of their charges. Everyone wants to get ahead, and for some members of Congress, the temptation to use their office for personal gain is too strong.
Our representatives and senators' dishonorable and illegal actions desperately call out for an Amendment to the Constitution setting term limits. Term limits would decrease any member of Congress's ability to amass the seniority and power needed to influence legislation on behalf of entities willing to pay corrupt politicians.
It's important to remember that we, the citizens of North Carolina, hold the power to bring about change. However, this power can only be realized if we actively engage in this critical process. Please take a few minutes to contact State Senators and strongly encourage them to support the passage of HJR 235. Your voice matters.
