As the 2025 municipal elections approach, residents of Haywood County towns stand at a crucial crossroads. These Christian conservative communities must find a way to rally their majority to turnout and vote this November to ensure their voices resonate loud and clear. This election not only offers Republican voters an opportunity to express their choices but also shapes the future of Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Canton, and Clyde. The stakes have never been higher, as the decisions made during these elections will impact local policies, economic growth, and community well-being.

The divide between Republican and socialist-Democrat ideologies is clear. While socialist Democrats call for increased government control, increased spending on social programs, and out-of-control growth to increase revenue, the Republican candidates promote limited government control, fiscal responsibility, sustainable development, and, most importantly, individual freedom. These differing approaches highlight why these elections are vital for the future of Haywood County and its cities.
The Republican Candidates
In this election cycle, four Republican candidates have emerged as true champions for their towns:

Landen Stevenson and Julia Freeman are running for seats on the Waynesville Council.

Adam Hatton is in the race for Canton Alderman.

Cory Nuckolls seeks election as Clyde Alderman.
These candidates share a core belief: city government should deliver essential services that the private sector cannot efficiently provide. Their focus is not merely on maintaining the status quo; they aim to bring innovative solutions to pressing issues. For example, the recent closure of the local mill, which employed over 200 people, and the destruction from Hurricane Helene flooding are urgent concerns that demand strong leadership. Stevenson, Freeman, Hatton, and Nuckolls are dedicated to facing these challenges, pushing for responsive and efficient city governments.
The Importance of Voter Turnout
Even though Haywood County boasts 17,006 registered Republicans against 11,276 registered Democrats and 18,721 unaffiliated voters, many Republicans and unaffiliated voters historically show signs of disengagement. This apathy has allowed socialist Democrats to dominate local governance, a situation that doesn't align with the county's conservative-leaning majority.
Voter turnout is essential. For instance, in the 2023 municipal elections, only 3,386 Republicans cast their ballots, a dismal 5% of potential Republican voters compared to a nationwide average of 30.4%.

This low turnout cost the Republicans their ability to win the Haywood County municipal elections in 2023: In the Waynesville mayor’s race, Joey Reece lost to Democrat incumbent Gary Caldwell by only 252 votes, while Town Council candidate Tré Franklin lost his bid for election over incumbent Julia Freeman by 266 votes. In Canton, challenger Adam Hatton lost his race against Democrat incumbent Ralph Hamlett by only 69 votes. In Clyde, Unaffiliated Kathy Cogburn Johnson fell 34 votes short of defeating incumbent Republican Dann Jesse.
Disappointing participation, which denied the Republican Party the ability to make crucial decisions and implement conservative ideals. The upcoming 2025 municipal elections are not just about choosing candidates; they are about reclaiming governance that genuinely reflects the Christian conservative values of the community.
Engaging the Community

Combating voter apathy requires active community engagement. Grassroots efforts, such as frequent candidate meet-and-greet forums, and voter outreach initiatives such as those being made by "The Informed Citizen," play a significant role in raising voter awareness. Candidates Stevenson, Freeman, Hatton, and Nuckolls are committed to connecting with residents, addressing their concerns directly, and building support for their campaigns.
Educating voters about how local policies directly impact their lives is equally important. For example, a rise in property taxes due to poor local governance can significantly affect families’ finances. Therefore, providing clear information and fostering open dialogue can empower residents to make informed choices.
The Role of Individual Initiative

At the heart of Haywood County's conservative philosophy is the belief in the strength of the individual. Republican candidates advocate for policies that encourage personal responsibility and initiative, allowing residents to thrive without heavy government oversight. This approach not only boosts economic growth but fosters a strong sense of community.
Prioritizing individual initiative encourages residents to pursue their goals. Support for local businesses, encouragement of entrepreneurship, and investment in education and workforce development are crucial to this vision. A future where every resident can succeed should be the target, and Republicans are committed to making that future a reality.
A Call to Action

As the 2025 municipal elections near, Republican voters in Haywood County towns face a clear call to action. It’s time to overcome apathy and actively shape the future of their community.
Residents can take crucial steps such as:
Engaging with candidates by attending meet-and-greet town hall meetings.
Attending local candidate campaign events to show support and encouragement.
Spreading awareness about the importance of voting to family members, friends, and neighbors.
By standing united and supporting Republican candidates, voters can ensure that their values are represented in local governance.
The Future is in Our Hands

The approaching Haywood County municipal elections present a unique opportunity for Christian conservative voters to be heard. With a commitment to individual initiative and fiscal responsibility, candidates like Landen Stevenson, Julia Freeman, Adam Hatton, and Cory Nuckolls are dedicated to improving their communities for a brighter future.
The urgency of voter turnout cannot be overstated. Now is the time for both Republican and Unaffiliated voters to take an active role in the electoral process and reclaim their towns' governance. Supporting candidates who prioritize personal empowerment and responsible government lays the groundwork for economic growth and prosperity across Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Canton, and Clyde.
As we move closer to the 2025 elections, let's remember: the strength of Haywood County resides in its people. Together, we can ensure that our values are reflected in local government, paving the way for a promising future.
