In today’s world, where strong beliefs often clash and opinions frequently divide us, civic engagement is more critical than ever. As significant local elections approach, we are reminded of the critical role every citizen plays in a representative republic, especially when confronting ideologies that oppose our values and our heritage.

For instance, the "Flag Burning" event hosted by Firestorm Books in West Asheville – a self-identified LGBTQ collective of anti-capitalist and anti-American establishment – raises critical issues about patriotism and civic duty. This event, scheduled for Labor Day, invites us to reflect on how we, as citizens, contribute to shaping our communities.

The event's organizers, while they may claim to represent marginalized voices, most perceive their actions as divisive, including the LGBTQ community in general. According to a recent Gallup poll, about 76% of Americans see the American flag as a symbol of unity and pride, representing the sacrifices of countless individuals throughout history. In contrast, the actions of groups like Firestorm Books evoke feelings of hatred and discontent rather than fostering a sense of community spirit.

Labor Day reminds us of the hard work and dedication of so many. The values celebrated on this day starkly contrast with those expressed by the event's organizers. A vast majority of area residents view the flag as a source of pride and unity, while radical groups, such as those associated with Firestorm Books, are becoming increasingly isolated, irrelevant, and act in ways that are seen as undermining this shared sense of purpose.

Civic engagement transcends simply casting a vote. It involves standing up for cherished values and participating actively in shaping community dynamics. The upcoming municipal elections in Haywood County are an excellent opportunity for Christian conservatives and others who appreciate the American spirit to make their voices heard.

The idea that civic engagement serves as a counter to radical ideologies is well-documented.

Historically, citizens have come together to defend their beliefs, particularly in times of turmoil. The current political climate, marked by polarization, demands renewed commitment to civic responsibility. Participating in local elections provides individuals with a robust platform to express their views and contribute to the representative republic process.

As we near the "Flag Burning" event, those who value patriotism must stay true to their beliefs. The commitment and hard work of the many who strive to make our nation great should not be drowned out by the actions of a few. Participation in local elections provides citizens with a clear opportunity to ensure their values are included in community discussions.

God Bless America and our Flag
