Our Federal Education System is Missing the Mark on Shaping True Citizens?

In recent years, our federally controlled education system has come under scrutiny for its socialist-communist indoctrination approach to teaching and learning. Our education system, which includes Haywood County Public Schools and public schools nationwide, has strayed from the foundational principles that once guided education, particularly the Western tradition's emphasis on shaping individuals into responsible citizens. Education that focuses on developing the mind and character of students, drawing from historical perspectives and the influence of Christianity on educational practices.

The Shift in Educational Philosophy

Historically, education was seen as a means to cultivate the whole person. It was about more than just acquiring knowledge; it was about shaping character, instilling values, and preparing individuals to contribute positively to society. However, over the past two decades, before President Trump's 2025 election, our federal education system prioritized socialist indoctrination curricula over personal development and critical thinking.

This shift raises essential questions: Are we truly preparing students to be responsible citizens? Are we equipping them with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of modern life? For Haywood County public schools and perhaps the majority of federal public schools, the answer is no. Of the students who graduate from Haywood County high schools, only 65% are proficient in math, and only 58% are proficient in reading. In our major socialist-Democrat-run cities, the proficiency rate is even lower.

And to achieve these dismal outcomes, we, in Haywood County, are spending an average of $13,500 in tax dollars per student per year. Inner city costs per student are even higher. Perhaps it is time to bring Christianity back into our schools and teaching philosophies.

The Role of Christianity in Education

For much of American history, education was closely tied to religious institutions, particularly Christian ones. These institutions recognized the importance of integrating faith with learning, understanding that education was not just about intellectual growth but also about moral and spiritual development.

Christian schools emphasized the Greek and Roman roots of reasoning, aligning philosophical understanding with the belief that all individuals are equal before God. This perspective fostered an environment where students were encouraged to think critically, engage with complex ideas, and develop a sense of purpose.

In contrast, today's failed federal education system neglects these foundational principles, focusing instead on socialist ideologies, DEI, gender identification, and social behaviors that avoid offending or hurting anyone's feelings, which overlooks the importance of character development and ethical reasoning.

The Importance of Character Education

Character education is essential for shaping responsible citizens. It involves teaching students about values such as honesty, integrity, empathy, and respect. These qualities are crucial for fostering a sense of community and encouraging individuals to contribute positively to society.

When education focuses solely on socialist ideological indoctrination, it neglects the development of these essential character traits. Students graduate lacking the academic knowledge and moral compass needed to navigate real-world challenges.

By integrating character education into the curriculum, schools can help students understand the importance of their actions and decisions, ultimately shaping them into better citizens.

Learning from American History

American history provides numerous examples of how education has played a vital role in shaping responsible citizens. From the founding fathers to civil rights leaders, many influential figures were products of an education system that emphasized character and civic responsibility.

For instance, there was a time in the American education system when classes began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer, included lessons on morality and ethics, and taught students about the Constitution and their responsibilities as American citizens. This approach helped cultivate a sense of civic duty and encouraged individuals to engage in the governance of their communities.

In contrast, today's federal education system neglects teaching students about the true history of our Nation and why it is the greatest Nation on earth. It neglects teaching students about our Constitution and its importance to the survival of our representative republic and the need for every citizen to be fully engaged in the governance of our country. This shift has led to a disconnect between students and their communities, ultimately hindering their ability to become active and responsible citizens.

The Need for a Comprehensive Approach

To address the shortcomings of the federal education system, there is a growing call for returning the responsibilities of educating our children to the individual states. It is at the state level that parents can become fully engaged with their children's education. They are in a position to emphasize the importance of developing the whole person, which includes their intellectual, emotional, and moral dimensions. Approaches that are best managed at the local level with limited government interference.

By incorporating elements of character education, critical thinking, and community engagement into the curriculum, schools can better prepare students for the challenges they will face as adults. This holistic approach not only benefits individual students but also strengthens communities as a whole.

Conclusion

The federal education system has strayed from the foundational principles that once guided education. By rejecting the Western tradition's emphasis on shaping individuals into responsible citizens, we have created a generation that lacks the character and moral grounding necessary for meaningful engagement in society.

To truly prepare students for the complexities of modern life, we must prioritize character education, critical thinking, and community engagement. By doing so, we can cultivate a new generation of responsible citizens who are equipped to navigate the challenges of the future.

As we reflect on the role of education in shaping individuals and communities, let us remember the importance of developing not just the mind but the heart and spirit as well. Only then can we create a truly effective education system that honors the rich traditions of the past while preparing students for the future.

Totally agree with your analysis.

Like you I have been interacting, reading, and researching political issues and I have reached the point that nothing some of these so-called educated commentators say surprises me. I have believed that they were just spouting the narrative, but now I have come to realize that these fools actually believe what they say. That's what you get when you get your news from tik-tok, MSMBC, CNN, etc.

Just got to smile about their total ignorance and keep on trucking on!
