Tuscola Football Coach's Treatment of Players Questioned
Tuscola High School football coach Jonathan Crompton has recently faced criticism for allegedly mistreating players, prompted by a passionate statement from Stacee Messer, mother of player Avery Messer. Her public remarks criticized Coach Crompton’s handling of the young athletes on the team, which led me to question the respect, leadership, and culture surrounding high school sports in Waynesville.

Stacee Messer’s message was clear and heartfelt. She expressed frustration with how Coach Crompton treats the players, including her son Avery. According to her, the coach has repeatedly belittled and disrespected the boys, creating an environment that feels abusive rather than supportive. She emphasized that she raised Avery to respect others and stand up for what is right, yet the coach treats him as if he were insignificant.
This is more than a personal grievance. Messer’s statement highlights a larger issue about how leadership should operate in youth sports. She questions the idea that the coach owns the team, arguing instead that the team belongs to the community of Waynesville. Her call-to-action encourages parents, players, and residents to demand better treatment and respect for the young athletes.

Leadership in high school sports extends beyond just winning games. Coaches influence the character and confidence of their players. When a coach employs threats, disrespect, or abuse, it can harm a player’s self-esteem and love for the game. Messer’s account indicates that Coach Crompton’s approach has crossed this line.
Young athletes need encouragement and guidance, especially during their formative years. Positive coaching fosters teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Negative treatment, however, leads to burnout, anxiety, and a loss of trust. The players deserve a coach who respects their effort and supports their growth both on and off the field.
One of the most compelling points Messer makes is about ownership. Coach Crompton reportedly says, “this is MY team,” but the reality is different. The team represents the town of Waynesville and its traditions. It belongs to the players, their families, and the community that supports them.
When a coach forgets this, it causes division and resentment. The community’s role is to hold leadership accountable and make sure the team environment shows shared values. Messer’s determination to “cause some stink” is a call for transparency and respect in how the team is run.
Addressing concerns like these requires action from multiple sides:

· Parents and Players should feel empowered to speak up when they experience or witness mistreatment.
·
· School Administrators must listen carefully and investigate claims to protect student welfare.
·
· Community Members can support the team by advocating for respectful leadership and positive culture.
·
· Coaches need ongoing training in leadership skills that emphasize respect, communication, and emotional intelligence.
·

By working together, the Waynesville community can rebuild pride in their football program and make sure every player feels valued.
Respect is the key to any successful team. It involves treating players as individuals with dignity and acknowledging their hard work. It also includes honoring the traditions and spirit of the game.
Messer’s statement reminds us that respect can't be taken for granted. It has to be earned and kept through consistent, fair treatment. Coaches who don't show respect risk hurting not just their players but the entire program’s reputation.
The situation at Tuscola High School serves as a reminder that leadership in youth sports carries significant responsibility. Stacee Messer’s bravery in speaking out highlights the importance of respectful, supportive coaching. The players deserve an environment where they can grow, learn, and enjoy the game without fear of mistreatment or disrespect.
Waynesville’s football team is part of the community, and it’s everyone's responsibility to protect its integrity. This moment provides an opportunity to reflect, take action, and build a stronger, more respectful future for the players and the town.
