This Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 9:00 AM, the historic steps of the Haywood County Courthouse will serve as a setting for a Remembrance Ceremony. This gathering marks a year since Hurricane Helene impacted our county. Attendees will honor the lives lost, celebrate the progress made, and express their heartfelt gratitude to the first responders, volunteers, and community partners who were essential to the recovery.
The Haywood County Government, together with the Towns of Canton, Clyde, Maggie Valley, and Waynesville, invites the entire Haywood County community to this important event. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced, the resilience of Haywood County residents, and the unity that helped those affected by the hurricane move forward.
This ceremony will celebrate hope, kindness, and resilience—values that continue to define Haywood County. It will honor the year-long journey of healing and rebuilding after Hurricane Helene brought significant challenges but also revealed the incredible strength and resilience of Haywood County residents.
In the weeks following the storm, over 1,000 volunteers participated in relief efforts, providing food, shelter, and support to affected families. Community groups, such as the Haywood County Community Resource Center, organized drives that collected more than 2 tons of food and supplies, demonstrating the true spirit of neighborly support.
A vital part of Haywood County's recovery has been the steadfast support from first responders and volunteers. Their dedication and selflessness have played a key role in the healing process. For example, firefighters risked their lives to protect homes during the storm, demonstrating the courage and commitment needed during a crisis. This gathering will serve as a platform to honor their contributions and remind us of the importance of community support.
This event is not only a moment of remembrance but also a celebration of the resilience that characterizes Haywood County; please join us in celebration this Saturday.
