Nearly 250 years ago, a brave group of Americans made an extraordinary commitment to freedom. They pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to forge a new nation. These Founders stood against the world's most formidable military power, creating a framework for a government that has long been viewed as a beacon of democracy and freedom. This is our inheritance. America is our birthright.
The Unyielding Foundation of American Principles

Despite the substantial changes over the last 250 years, the United States thrives when its laws and policies—whether they involve immigration, national security, education, or technology—reflect the principles on which it was founded. According to a 2021 survey by the American Political Science Association, only 39% of Americans can name all three branches of government. This statistic illustrates a concerning gap in understanding our foundational ideals.
The ideas that drove the American Revolution and the essential frameworks of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution should not be forgotten. For future leaders to guide our nation effectively, they need to grasp these aspirations deeply.
Yet, a troubling trend exists: vital history has become a lesser part of our conversations. Consider the impact of athletes kneeling during the national anthem or educators choosing not to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. These actions underscore the pressing question of how to instill a sense of patriotism and a thorough understanding of our founding principles in the next generation.
Igniting Curiosity About Our History

Teaching younger generations about the First Amendment, federalism, or the separation of powers starts with sparking curiosity about our Founding. Engaging them in discussions not only enriches their minds but also fosters a feeling of informed patriotism in their hearts.
In today's world, where misinformation spreads rapidly, it is crucial to stress the importance of knowledge. This involves engaging in rich conversations about civic responsibility and active participation. Recent studies have shown that youth involvement in civic engagement activities significantly boosts their commitment to democratic values, with participation rates tied to a 56% increase in voting later in life.
Patriotism thrives in those who embrace their cultural heritage and strive for a better understanding of the freedoms they enjoy. By sharing real stories of bravery and sacrifice, we can deepen the American identity, fueling a passionate allegiance to our values.
Letting Go of Despair: A Call to Action

Too often, we hear a pessimistic narrative suggesting that recovering America's founding principles is impossible. This viewpoint dismisses the profound courage of our ancestors. Remember General Washington crossing the icy Delaware or the resilience of troops at Valley Forge. These moments should inspire gratitude, not despair.
We inherit a legacy that calls for action. It is our duty to strive for a renewed understanding of our founding principles and to make a positive contribution to our society. When we remain passive during pivotal times, we dilute the very ideals our forefathers championed.
The Moral Duty of Patriotism

Patriotism is not merely an emotion; it represents a moral obligation to protect and honor the principles upon which our nation was founded. The love of country is both an ethical and a civic duty to safeguard the freedoms secured through sacrifice.
To rekindle this sentiment in our communities, we must engage in open dialogues, volunteer for civic initiatives, and seize educational opportunities. By doing this, we not only celebrate our birthright but actively nurture it.
The Informed Citizen

An informed citizenry is the pillar of a thriving democracy. Education must go beyond textbooks; it should come alive in our communities, families, and schools. By fostering discussions, encouraging meaningful debates, and promoting critical thinking, we ensure that our nation’s core values are not just known but deeply felt.
This culture of informed citizenship also emphasizes the balance between rights and responsibilities. Each liberty carries the duty to respect and uphold the rights of others, reinforcing a cooperative spirit.
A Call to Revive Our Spirit

As we honor Independence Day, let us pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and fortunes by revitalizing the spirit of America's founding principles. We are custodians of this incredible legacy, tasked with passing it on to the next generation.
Let us fully embrace our birthright, understanding that while we cannot repay our Founders, we can honor them through our actions and conversations. By committing to ensure that their vision endures, we pave the path toward a brighter future.
As we look ahead, our greatest days can lie ahead if we embrace our responsibilities as engaged citizens. A renewed sense of patriotism, rooted in understanding and respect for our history, will lead to progress, unity, and a flourishing democratic society.
HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE "INDEPENDENCE DAY."

Excellent column for Independence Day!!!! You need to send this to The Mountaineer…….
I feel that the exclusion of Civics from the educational curriculum and the cancellation of the military draft are among the top reasons for the decline in American patriotism. Shame on us for allowing both of these to occur.
